Over 50 – Work on Your Balance With an Isometric Exercise

body balanceAs we age we tend to use our muscles less and less. We are not as active as we were in our youth. First our muscle tone starts to go which leads to poor posture. With poor posture comes a shuffling of our feet. With shuffling of our feet comes easier tripping and falling which can lead to broken bones.

Remember when you are over 50 it is never too late to start with an isometric exercise program to bring back strength and balance. Along with strengthening muscles comes better posture, easier breathing, better walking (lifting of your feet- not shuffling) which leads to better balance.

Can you stand and lift one leg and stay in that position for at least 30 seconds? Most individuals can not. Start with an easy isometric exercise. Stand next to a wall or counter. Place one hand on the wall or counter. Then while standing tall lift one leg off the ground. Go from using one hand on the wall to just using your fingertips. Then try to remove your hand from your support. If needed the wall or counter is right there to catch you. It will take constant practice to get better. You will feel your ankle shaking or slightly shifting side to side. The muscles in your ankles will get stronger and stronger the more often you perform this simple task.

Each of your legs will perform differently. We are all stronger on one side of our bodies than the other. It will take time but practice this simple task a few times a day. After about a week you should be able to stand without holding on to anything for at least 30 seconds. Read the rest of this entry »

Balancing Act

body balanceAt least one third of the senior population will experience a fall in their lifetime. Many of these seniors will have several falls, all within a year. A good many of these falls result in broken hips, and a quarter of these falls result in fatalities, generally within a year.

Proprioception is the technical term applied to the bodies’ balance. The definition of proprioception is “sensing the motion and position of the body”. This is accomplished by sensory organs, of which there are two groups. One group is found in the muscles and the other group is found in the ligaments and capsular ligaments of the joints (connective tissues).

There is a constant communication flowing from these sensory organs to the spinal cord and to the brain. This of course is a greatly simplified explanation. Therefore, any breakdown along these lines will affect the way our joints, muscles and ligaments react to any movement we try to perform. You have heard the expression, “zig instead of zag”; well the meaning is the same. You try to tell your body to move one way, but the response is different (due to faulty sensory signals), and the result could be a fall.

In many instances, these problems in the proprioceptive sensory organs can also manifest themselves as other conditions directly related to improper movement of these joints and muscles. When the improper movement occurs with any frequency, for any length of time, other manifestations, such as pain and stiffness are usually the end result. This further enhances the chances of falling. Read the rest of this entry »

Body PH Balance Important to Your Health

body balanceDid you know that your body continually strives for body pH balance. This is because the level of pH in your body has a great effect on the overall chemistry of health in your body. When this body pH balance is challenged, many health problems can take place. However, when you have a balanced body pH, then viruses, bacteria, yeasts and other pathogens are not able to survive inside our bodies.

So how do we insure that our pH level is where it needs to be, so we can all stay healthy? It once again comes down to your diet. Your diet has a profound impact on the body’s pH levels. Therefore, it is always advisable that your diet should include 80% alkaline forming foods. This means that the less acidic foods you eat, the easier you are making it on your body, and the better it will be for your overall health and wellness.

The body pH balance can be described as your internal balance of alkaline and acid. If your body is pH balanced, it is full of vitality. You’ll find that you have increased energy, a clear mind, and your skin has that healthy glow it once had.

And this applies to everything living on our earth. Everything must remain in a pH balanced state for the ecosystem to function as it was designed to? That’s right, the pH of a body affects every aspect of health in the world. It may be hard to believe, but pH levels truly regulate, effect, and control nearly everything in nature, including your own body.

To restore, maintain or insure that our body pH balance is always where it needs to be, can be quite a challenge. When you take into consideration the way we unknowingly abuse our bodies to the outside elements of the world. Think about the food we ingest, the places we go, different altitudes, switching time zones, and our lack of concern for health in general. Read the rest of this entry »
